Spike Sisters 2025

We're excited to annouce the return of Spike Sisters, a special initiative by the Manly Warringah Volleyball Association, focused on empowering and supporting females of all ages through volleyball.

We believe that sports play a vital role in boosting confidence, mental wellbeing, and physical health. However, many girls drop out of sports during their teenage years. Spike Sisters is here to change that! We’ll be hosting games where you play in teams with other club members your age and adult members of our playing group. We'll also have sessions featuring guest speakers who’ll share their inspiring sporting journeys.

Join us, connect with fellow players, and let’s grow stronger together!

Competition Details:

When: Weekly games from February to April   (1 game per week for 8 weeks) - 

Game Duration: 15 minute warm up | 60 minute game

Amazons

In Greek mythology, the Amazons are portrayed in a number of ancient epic poems and legends, such as the Labours of Heracles, the Argonautica and the Iliad. They were a group of female warriors and hunters who were known for their physical agility, strength, archery, riding skills, and the arts of combat. Their society was closed to men and they only raised their daughters and returned their sons to their fathers, with whom they would only socialize briefly.

Courageous and fiercely independent, the Amazons, commanded by their queen, regularly undertook extensive military expeditions into the far corners of the world, from Scythia to Thrace, Asia Minor and the Aegean Islands, reaching as far as Arabia and Egypt. Besides military raids, the Amazons are also associated with the foundation of temples and the establishment of numerous ancient cities like Ephesos, Cyme, Smyrna, Sinope, Myrina, Magnesia, Pygela, etc.

World History is abundant with the stories of great female Monarchs. Some great female Monarchs include:

Elizabeth II (Elizabeth Alexandra Mary; 21 April 1926 – 8 September 2022) was Queen of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms from 6 February 1952 until her death in 2022. Her reign of 70 years and 214 days is the longest of any British monarch and the second-longest of any sovereign state. When her father died in February 1952, Elizabeth, then 25 years old, became queen of the Commonwealth. Significant events included her coronation in 1953 and the celebrations of her Silver, Golden, Diamond, and Platinum jubilees. Although there was occasional republican sentiment and media criticism of her family, her personal popularity in the United Kingdom remained consistently high. Elizabeth died aged 96 at Balmoral Castle, and was succeeded by her eldest son, Charles III.

Elizabeth I (7 September 1533 – 24 March 1603)[a] was Queen of England and Ireland from 17 November 1558 until her death in 1603. She was the last monarch of the House of Tudor. Elizabeth was the only surviving child of Henry VIII and his second wife, Anne Boleyn. When Elizabeth was two years old, her parents' marriage was annulled, her mother was executed, and Elizabeth was declared illegitimate. Henry restored her to the line of succession when she was 10, via the Third Succession Act 1543. After Henry's death in 1547, Elizabeth's younger half-brother Edward VI ruled until his own death in 1553, bequeathing the crown to a Protestant cousin, Lady Jane Grey, and ignoring the claims of his two half-sisters, the Catholic Mary and the younger Elizabeth, in spite of statutes to the contrary. Edward's will was set aside within weeks of his death and Mary became queen, deposing and executing Jane. During Mary's reign, Elizabeth was imprisoned for nearly a year on suspicion of supporting Protestant rebels. Upon her half-sister's death in 1558, Elizabeth succeeded to the throne and (despite her tumultuous life) set out to rule by good counsel. In government, Elizabeth was more moderate than her father and siblings had been. One of her mottoes was video et taceo ("I see and keep silent"). In religion, she was relatively tolerant and avoided systematic persecution. Elizabeth's reign became known as the Elizabethan era. The period is famous for the flourishing of English drama, led by playwrights such as William Shakespeare and Christopher Marlowe, the prowess of English maritime adventurers, such as Francis Drake and Walter Raleigh, and for the defeat of the Spanish Armada. Elizabeth is acknowledged as a charismatic performer ("Gloriana") and a dogged survivor ("Good Queen Bess") in an era when government was ramshackle and limited, and when monarchs in neighbouring countries faced internal problems that jeopardised their thrones. After the short, disastrous reigns of her half-siblings, her 44 years on the throne provided welcome stability for the kingdom and helped to forge a sense of national identity.

Queens

Cleopatra VII Thea Philopator (69 BC – 10 August 30 BC) was Queen of the Kingdom of Egypt from 51 to 30 BC, and its last active ruler. After her death, Egypt became a province of the Roman Empire. Cleopatra's legacy survives in ancient and modern works of art. In the visual arts, her ancient depictions include Roman busts, paintings, and sculptures, cameo carvings and glass, Ptolemaic and Roman coinage, and reliefs. In Renaissance and Baroque art, she was the subject of many works including operas, paintings, poetry, sculptures, and theatrical dramas. She has become a pop culture icon of Egyptomania since the Victorian era, and in modern times, Cleopatra has appeared in the applied and fine arts, burlesque satire, Hollywood films, and brand images for commercial products.

Valkyries

A paladin who assumes the Oath of the Valkyrie swears to be the shield for those incapable of defending themselves. Dedication. Your duty is a benevolent but morbid one. Brook not the disrespect of the dead, and meet any desecration of those departed with swift judgment. The Oath of the Valkyrie calls to paladins who seek to enforce the transitions of souls to the afterlife.

The Valkyries were important figures in Norse culture for the same reason strength and tactic were: greater success in battle. The Valkyries were an inspiration to warriors to fight in a way that was worthy of Valhalla, so this idea was just as powerful as literal power. Unlike the mighty gods like Thor or Odin, the Valkyries are not just warriors; they are the divine choosers of fate. They embody both beauty and ferocity, making them a popular choice for those seeking tattoos that signify strength, honor, and protection.
